5K Update -- week 3

I've begun week three's training. But, let me go back to last week's training. Or, more specifically, the weekend before last week's training. I ate my way through the weekend. To the point, I ate a LOT of monkey bread. If you don't know what that is, it's balls of dough rolled up, then rolled in cinnamon sugar and put into a bundt pan. It's then baked. The monkey bread I had was then topped with a most delicious cream cheese frosting and some walnuts. Yeah, super duper healthy. FANTASTICALLY YUMMY!! So, when I did my first run of the week last week, it SUCKED! I thought I was going to die. First of all it was cold. Well, cold for Beaufort. I'm not sure that it was 35 degrees when I took off. Two shirts, pants, jacket, scarf, ear warmer, gloves, etc. Not only did I have a ton of clothes on weighing me down, but the monkey bread was waaaaay slowing me down. (I literally had a monkey on my back! Or at least around my middle and on my heiney!) Anyway, I did all three of my planned runs and by the end of the week I felt great.
So, today I started week three. It was a challenge, but I did it and I already am seeing cardiovascular changes. One thing I am learning is that the week usually starts out challenging, but by the last run of the week the run feels great.
Keep cheering for me. I'm off to run...

OOTMOB

(That's Out of the Mouths of Babes for those of you who forgot!)

Yesterday we were cleaning up Cadey's room. We came across some broken toys and I put them in the garbage bag. Cadey says, "Don't throw those away. My daddy can fix them with his screws. My daddy is good at screwing."

I know what she meant, but I thought I was going to pee my pants I was laughing so hard. Now, try to explain to your 4 year old why that's so funny...

5K Training-- Day 1 (Again)

Today I ran the first workout for my 5K training. Well, I actually ran it for the first time on Saturday, but since I'm so anal, and there are three scheduled workouts per week, I thought I'd plan all my runs on M,W, and F. So... that meant I had to do workout number 1 again today.

When I ran on Saturday, it went fine, but honestly, I was surprised at how challenging it was. I don't exactly consider myself out of shape. Evidentally NOT in 5K shape, however!!

So, you might be asking, what EXACTLY is the workout right now?
Well...right now, I'm walking briskly for 5 minutes to warm up and then alternating 60 seconds of running with 90 seconds of running briskly for a total of 25-30 minutes.

I was a little worried about this morning's workout, as it's cold here and very windy. But, it went very well. I ran through the historic district downtown, and it was really pretty. Cold and windy, but pretty. (Note to self: put some gloves in the car...)

Overall, I'm still very motivated and looking forward to more training. Bring it on!

I am a little sore though...

The training begins...

I've decided to start training for a 5K. I don't have a specific race in mind that I want to enter, but I do want to be able to run. I've printed and plan to follow a program from Cool Running called the "Couch to 5K Running Program." http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Though I don't consider myself a couch potato (more an office chair/computer type spud) I wanted something new. My workouts had begun to get mundane and therefore were not motivating me at all.

So, you ask, why post it on the blog? Well, I'm doing it to keep myself accountable. Don't worry... At this point I have no plans to bore you with my daily diet, exercise, water consumption, etc. I just want to be able to share my running progress with you as a way to keep myself accountable.

Here's where you come in: Feel free (and please do) ask me where I'm at in the program and how I'm doing. Challenge me, question me, and cheer me on. If I know you've got my back, I think I'll be more successful.

Watch for more postings on my training and maybe even a few pics when I decide to enter races.

Check out this commercial. After watching it, you might be so motivated that you'll join me to train!!

Out of the mouths of babes...

Last night Cadey was choosing the next day's school clothes. She chose a dress, stating it was fancy and that it was "perfect for Jesus' party." Apparently, Cadey doesn't realize that celebrating Jesus' birthday was soooo last month. Anyway, she went on singing the song "Jesus loves me," and at one point stopped, looked at me, and said, "That song is good for helping us to remember the importance of Jesus' BURP."

We discussed Jesus' BIRTH and talked about Cadey's birth. She then said, "Oh. I was born on a BURP too!" SIGH!!

Also heard around here lately...

Matthew (freshly changed from undies to a pullup): "Can I put a poop in here?" Pointing to the pullup...

Watch for more OOTMOBs coming your way soon....

Our Aquarium and Beach Trips

While my parents were here, we went up to Charleston one day. It was a bit cold, but we enjoyed lunch and some shopping in the historic district. We then took the kids to the South Carolina Aquarium. They had a BALL!! We had a lot of fun too.

Another trip we took was to the beach at St. Helena Island. That day it was quite warm (upper 70's -- eat your heart out Pacific Northwesterners!!) and so the kids played in the sand and waves while the adults soaked up some warmth.

Holiday Favorites

Well, I've finally slowed down a little after the holidays that I can post some of our favorite pictures from the holidays. We had a great visit with my mom and stepdad, and the kids loved playing with them. Mark (with some help from Mom, Bryan, myself, and the kids) made an amazing Nativity set that we'll have for many years to come. It was a HUGE project, but I am so thankful and glad to have it! Anyway, you can pretty much see our activities from the pictures. ENJOY and Happy New Year!
